PURPOSE RENEWED

“You can’t govern if you don’t win … you can’t win if you don’t know who you are”
People crave purpose. We all do, meaning, a visceral sense that life is not chaos.
As Democrats, we have lost our sense of purpose. It’s that simple. Over decades of complacency, that basic sense of purpose that led us through the Great Depression and the Civil Rights movement, that stood up for equal pay and gay marriage and everything else, has fallen away in disrepair.
But that sense of purpose is still there. Every single Democrat in this country feels it. It’s there, right in front of us, waiting to be picked up. And that sense of purpose comes down to one single thing: creating a just society .. for everyone, from the brownest American in the biggest city, down to the very whitest person in the reddest corner of America. That concept, the opening words of the Declaration of Independence that have inspired us for 250 years, is the way forward. It’s our purpose put in five simple words: all people are created equal. And those words are just as true and just as powerful as when they were written down 250 years ago.
We are entering a period of darkness, a darkness that will rapidly encompass far more than just Democrats. Standing up and championing that greater purpose, championing democracy, is what will carry us out of that darkness and unite us, not only with other Democrats, but with all the unaffiliated and disaffected voters that hunger for that very same light. This is our moment and this is our purpose, to champion these fundamental American values and make them the nation’s, once and for all, to embed them so deeply that they will never be questioned again.
But we need that banner, we need the words to rally behind. Pick up the Democratic Creed. Read it. Think about it. Then accept it .. adopt it as an organization, pledge yourself to it as an individual, it doesn’t matter. But understand that affirming is only the first step. To push back the darkness, we must make these values come alive. We must make them real, relevant in everyday, even to the haters. That is how we win, that is when we win.
Look for more, soon.
The Democratic Creed is introduced by Lane Gosnay at a rally in Austin, Texas, in February 2025.
