Congratulations on pledging your support for the Democratic Creed, and the values and vision it represents! You’ve taken a personal stand, and it matters. Now, it’s time to take the next step and start the process of change where you live.

Here are some easy things to do. Go as far as your energy and determination carry you!

Read: have you read Democrats 101? This short, plain-spoken book is our origin story as Democrats. It goes to the heart of everything we need to do. Read it … or reread it … and take a long, hard look at the definitions of Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity. These are the simple, powerful principles that outline our future.

Ask questions: begin talking about these ideas with people you know. Start by asking basic questions. What does it mean to be a Democrat (or an American)? Are there American values? Is there anything that holds us all together? Ask, listen, and ask some more. The first step isn’t persuading, it’s getting folks to start thinking about these things.

Spread the idea: once folks are curious, introduce the Democratic Creed, and the definitions. Encourage them to read the book. Get them together for a cup of coffee to talk things over. See where it goes.

Ready for more?

Get involved: reach out to your local activist organizations … your local Democratic Party, your local Indivisible, your local book club … anybody at all who cares about what’s happening to our country. Take along a copy of the book, a copy of the Creed and the Definitions. Get them to start thinking about it. Then get them to adopt, and pledge. That is how this spreads, person-to-person.

Volunteer: Volunteer with your local organization, and if you’re still chomping at the bit, volunteer with us. We’re all volunteers at Dems 101.org, and as this expands faster and faster, the work just keeps growing. All you have to do is want to be involved. A simple email to us is all it takes.

Finally, welcome aboard! You are joining a true community, a growing community of like-minded, grassroots folks all across the country who have said enough! … people who are determined to create a just society ... as long as it takes.

We further believe that American democracy depends on:

• A free and independent press, dedicated to truth and objectivity.

• An educated citizenry with free and easy access to information.

• A nation that accepts and embraces diversity.

• Full financial transparency in election campaigns, in political office, and in government transactions.

• An American economy based on Free Enterprise, and protected by the government from the baser instincts of large corporations and the financially powerful.

• The continued existence of a strong military, free of political involvement and financial corruption, and dedicated to protecting us against all enemies foreign and domestic.

• Educators and law enforcement officers being treated as among the most important parts of society, highly paid and stringently selected, and meeting exacting national standards of professionalism, ethics and psychological motivation.

• American citizens who care. Without this, nothing is possible.
