Nothing is going to change in this country until we have a clear, fundamental statement of values. That means a statement that is written down and acknowledged by everyone, even those with hate in their heart. That clear statement has to define who we are, not just as Democrats, but as Americans, what we aspire to as a nation. And that clear statement has to originate inside our party. There is no one else.
Making that statement means accepting that we are more than just a political party, that our purpose is far bigger than just the next election. It means accepting that we have a moral imperative: to create a just society … as long as it takes.
None of this starts in Washington. None of this happens from the top down. This starts with the grassroots of the Democratic Party. This starts with you, the county parties and Indivisibles and all the other activist out there. Because there is no one else.
This is about changing our mindset. This is about the way we view politics, and that is as fundamental as it gets. It is going to be a long struggle. It’s going to mean layers of work by a lot of people over a very long time, but it begins with acknowledging the values themselves. It begins by standing up for the American values in the Democratic Creed, the American definitions of Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity, and the American vision of a justice society … as long as it takes. That is the first step, and it’s the most important step of all.
The time is now. For a very long time, we and the Republicans were two traditional political parties, facing off in a traditional political arena. No more. The world has changed, our nation has changed, and now we face two choices as Democrats, ready or not:
Be the party that rises up and accepts its true identity as champion of America’s soul.
Be the party that presides over the demise of everything it believes in.
That choice is up to us, the grassroots … both individually and collectively.
Make the choice you know in your heart is true. Stand up with your brothers and sisters all across this country. Adopt the Democratic Creed as an organization, pledge your support individually. Do it now, and do it proudly. Then join us in changing the political conversation, once and for all.
